Stand in solidarity with your lecturers by: refusing to attend scab classes and joining picket lines/marches across the North. It is not enough simply to acknowledge the strike, it is vital that students take an active role in supporting all workers in defence of our public services. Make a definitive stand against austerity and vicious attacks on public services and workers!

FEE is an all-Ireland grassroots campaign which opposes austerity and supports action which aims to actively resist ideologically imposed cuts to workers living standards north and south.

We believe that: – workers should not have to pay for a crisis they did not cause.

- That the worst effects of the crisis can be addressed by central progressive taxation on the rich and corporations.

The current assault on the public sector is a political project of the right; one which originated with the Tory led government in Britain in alliance with their financiers in the city of London, and is being perpetuated by the Stormont administration in the North. The aim of this project is to drive down wages and living conditions and open the door to a mass privatization of public services under the guise of tackling a budget deficit.

Within Queens this assault has come in the form of raised tuition fees for students outside the North of Ireland, cuts to teaching and other services, stagnating wages and now an attempt to force lecturers and ancillary staff involved with the USS pension package to work longer and contribute more while receiving less. We stand in solidarity with our lecturers as they stood with us over the issue of fees. FEE QUB will be showing solidarity by attending picket lines across Belfast tomorrow on November 30th, as well as attending the rally at Mandella Hall, QUBSU at 11am and joining the trade union feeder march from City Hospital to City Hall.

FEE Supports the Strikes is a post from Free Education for Everyone

All of the trade unions representing staff working on the Maynooth campus are taking part in a one-day strike on Tuesday November 24th. The strike is protesting against the threat of further government-imposed cuts in the pay of university employees. Action is being taken following ballots in which the majority of members of the unions that are taking part voted in favour of coming out on strike.

Pickets will be placed at the entrances to the North and South campuses throughout the day on Tuesday. Students are asked not to pass these pickets and not to enter the campus while the strike is in progress. (A distinction is, of course, recognised here between students residing on campus and those who would normally be coming in to attend lectures etc. There is no intention to interfere with anyone’s access to their home. The aim is to bring the ordinary working parts of the university – its lecture theatres, labs, library etc. – to a halt for the period of the strike).

Hopefully you will have been informed of the cancellation of your classes by your lecturers in advance of Tuesday. If you are in any doubt, please contact the lecturer concerned to confirm that cancellation. With official pickets in place, the only people who will be conducting or attending classes will be those who have deliberately chosen to break the strike. Given the wide range of Maynooth employees stopping work on the day, it is quite likely that the campus will close down completely. University management intend to try and keep it open but health and safety considerations may lead them to reconsider this position once the strike is in progress. If you do not wish to actively express support for the strike, your wisest course of action may be to stay away from Maynooth on November 24th. Public transport services are likely to be disrupted on that day because workers right across the public sector are going to be involved in the strike.

It must be emphasised that trade union members on the campus are seeking and will warmly welcome student support for their action. Pay cuts are part of a wider package of measures that will progressively reduce the resourcing and the quality of the education provided to students in our schools and universities. The return to charging students tuition fees forms part of the same political agenda. Students and staff have a common interest in the protection of our education system against the kind of destructive changes with which it is currently threatened.

The protest follows similar moves from students at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Sociology and a demonstration by students of Roskilde University. While these protests have been independent of each other, Dalum warned that the student demos are gathering support.

‘We are holding a national demonstration on 26 February in every major city, where we will be joined by primary and secondary school students.’

JNUSU will also organize a protest march on Tuesday at 9 pm on the campus. JNU students have been protesting for about two weeks for demands like installation of electricity metres for each hostel room, conservation of the green areas on the campus like the Parthasarthy rocks and reforms in JNU’s admission procedure. 

JNUSU had also launched a protest on February 10 for which around 2000 students had turned up.
