Making A Divide By 83 Counter? Search Forums Recent Posts. Sep 30, 1. Does anyone have any experience with the 74HC programmable divide-by- n counter? I need to make a divide by 83 counter, looks like the should be able to do it, but looking at the Phillips datasheet is pretty much Greek to me.
Does anyone know how to wire theor for that matter, any other counter so that it divides by 83?

Oct 1, 7hc160. I’ve used it and it is a great device. Even better suited to much higher counts than 83 since it can count so high to strange numbers. No software required, no FGPAs, config proms etc. As I recall there was two sources Philips and Harris.
I’m not sure where the Harris part ended up. Maybe Intersil, maybe still Harris? I’d have to check. Both datasheets were confusing but I recall the Philips one being easier to understand ;- I also recall the datasheets were totally correct, you just had think like a series counter ;- No, seriously I’ll take a look and see if I can recall how it works.
I recall that one datasheet was easier to understand if you followed the diagram right-to-left.

The 74HC was a great part because it allowed very high counts my need was over and needed no additional glue logic like AND gates to reset the counter and required no programming. On the other hand, I recall that the 74HC16x part I cannot recall which it was at the moment had a known and documented glitch problem when they were cascaded.
In that particular design I reset the counter at a count of 65 which saved me from seeing the glitch and also I didn’t need glue because I took the 6th bit and tied it to the synchronous reset.
Count was and then reset. The count of 83 not as clean and would require some other logic.
