I know a smattering of music theory but mostly I just strum chords and sing along. I decided I want to learn more about how chords are formed and how they work together and about how to build chord progressions. This book does a great job of taking a lot of scattered ideas and putting them together in a consistent format.
A lot of the info is basic to me – movable major chords and I-IV-V chord patterns for example. But then there are things I didn’t know like the A D F thing. I never got around to memorizing scales and building 7th and 9th chords never made any sense to me. This book does a good job of putting together scales and chord formations. Also, this is the first such book I’ve found that doesn’t have a “trap door” around page 5 where it goes from very basic scale patterns to suddenly incomprehensible and unexplained theory.
So, I wouldn’t say this is for the rank beginner, and obviously not a companion volume for your studies at Juliard, but anywhere in between jzzz should be very helpful to introduce some new ideas and also as a reference. I’ve been playing on and off for about 15 years. This book really bridged the gap and I learned much more about the circle of fifths than I roadmap there was to learn. He didn’t go into more theory such as constructing each key signature from the circle of fifths but he went into some meaty guitar-related info such as patterns on the guitar and progressions based on the circle of fifths.
I’ve had music theory in the past but if you haven’t, go read up a bit first. Also, there’s a lot to this book. For example, the author says “learn the notes on the 6th and 5th string” and that’s one bullet item on a page – you really need to spend the time on this! Learn some basics then come back when you’re ready for an intermediate course on theory so you can construct your own chords and chord progressions instead of just memorizing them.
The author never proclaimed this to be an exhaustive reference – he claimed it to be roadmaps which are just patterns on the guitar to make learning easier. It does this and much more. I had been playing guitar for a while when I started working on this book.
Fretboard Roadmaps – Jazz Guitar
It provides a different way of looking at your guitar and getting more out of it. Rather than starting with the standard “three chord trick”, this book begins by building your familiarity with notes and scales and then moves into chord patterns and progressions. It is an easy book to follow and a good method for escaping from the end of the fretboard and learning what you can achieve further down the neck.
It is quite readable in kindle format. I have been banging my guitars around for years, and I play pretty well, but I’m like a monkey – monkey see, monkey do. I know basic chords, and I’ve tortuously put some lead stuff together with some tab help.
But now that I’ve started this book, I am understanding what I’m doing; I understand how the notes jaaz together, where to find them, and how they make up chords. Instead of just “put one finger here, and two more over there” you will understand the relationship between the major notes and it’s 3rds and 5ths, etc. I’m ugitar even halfway through the book, and I have gotten much, much more than my money’s worth from this.
These “roadmaps” are getting me past the “roadblocks” that have kept me from really advancing in my level of play. I’m so fired up from the doors this book has opened, I can’t believe I put my guitar down long enough to type all of this. Johnny Guitar Top Contributor: This is a “not bad” summary text, but I do not recommend this book because I felt that the author did not explain terms prior to their use, which for beginners, is very confusing.
I was familiar with the terms so it was ok for me. It covers the major topics but not that well, in my opinion. I’d recommend instead Barrett Tagliarino’s Fretboard workbook which is excellent, and if you are looking for a full guitar curriculum, the DVD course “Learn and Master Guitar”. You can get everything you need without purchasing this book.
It’s not bad, but its not complete and you’ll end up buying other redundant materials to just to fully understand it. A friend got this book for me at my request. This book taught me more about the guitar than anything else I ever tried. I’ve taken lessons, read books, watched videos, but nothing did it for me like this book. Don’t expect to skim through it and learn everything at once. And nowhere does the author claim that this book is for beginners. Intermediate skill level players will benefit most.
That’s not to say that beginners can’t learn from it. It’s just not a beginning book.
Fred’s a genius in a field where they are few and far between. I like this book, because it gives cool shortcuts to memorize chords, notes, intervals, chord progressions and some licks.
It’s not the best guitar book and it has its flaws, however it is that kind of book that gives you real tips. It is ideal fgetboard you left the guitar for a while; it gives you the information to switch roadamps.
