My Chicana identity is grounded in the Indian woman’s history of resistance. Like la Lloronathe Indian woman’s only means of protest was wailing. I was totally immersed en lo mexicano, a boderlands, peasant, isolated, mexicanismo. Yet leaving home I did not lose touch with my origins because lo mexicano is my system. Not me sold out my people but qnzaldua me. No, I do not buy all the myths of the tribe into which I was born. It’s a legitimate reaction. So, don’t give me your tenets and your laws.
