Feb 24, Rachel rated it did not like it Shelves: I’m apparently completely in the minority with this book, but I absolutely hated it. The writing itself was stilted and formal. The research is hit and miss – the general historical outline is correct, but for some reason, all of the inhabitants of the Scottish highlands speak English fluently The hihgland were irritating and utterly unlikeable – and their actions were nonsensical.

Tory leanhe running burfoughs from her abusive father when she is conveniently picked up by Scottish warriors w I’m apparently completely in the minority with this book, but I absolutely hated it. Tory is running away from her abusive father when she is conveniently picked up by Scottish warriors who will take her far away – only to spend the next months fighting wishse and nail to escape back to the family she was running away from in the first place.

During that time, she hides her identity, convinces the laird of the castle to fall in love with her even though he thinks she’s just a whore, and turns nearly the entire population of the castle highoand her favor even though they’ve been bred to hate the English. How she makes everyone love her is beyond me – she’s haughty and dense most of the time.

Grant is the leann – he treats Tory awfully and she thinks he’s her protector. She doesn’t seem to realize that as laird, he can tell everyone to stop making her scrub the floor and clean the kennel, and it obviously never occurs to him either. And all of this within the first pages. I kept putting the book down and wisnes it up later, hoping it would get better, and it just didn’t.

There was one very disturbing aspect of this book that bothered me tremendously. Others may not be bothered by it, but it was distasteful to me.

While I understand fully the history between England and Scotland and the intense feelings of hatred shared by both countries at the time, I have read other similar Highlander books set in this time period where those sentiments were expressed in far less offensive ways.

That being said, and after getting past that part, I found the rest of the storyline enjoyable reading.

I love reading about Scotland’s history albeit in this formatand the research undertaken by Ms. Learning about the Scottish hero, Andrew de Moray, and his significant role in Scotland’s history, was a plus.
