wormohle I am usually able to hear the soul in most of his albums, even if I’m initially disappointed see Engines of Creation. Still, his last few albums have left me very disappointed. This is a trend that began with “Strange Beautiful Music”, an album that I liked but which felt like a step down after his masterpiece “Crystal Planet”.

Successive releases have done little to make me feel any better. My hopes were not high for this one but Anf was presently surprised. This actually feels like a “step up” for the first time since “Crystal Planet”. Is it as good? Is it better than anything abd done since? I can unequivocally say YES. It’s been spinning non-stop in my car and on my computer ever since release.

If you don’t like it on first listen, give it a chance.

The keyboard flourishes give it an almost prog feel at certain points, which I don’t think is a bad thing. Still, if you dislike some of the artistic experiments here, just give it a few listens.

After a few spins, those little changes have a way of fading into the background, providing nothing more than a little textural change. Satch’s playing steps up, front and center, and he’s in great form this time around. Joe just keeps getting better and better. Jeff Campitelli on drums I was so happy to see Keneally added to the lineup, his keyboard work is just incredible, I hope he makes many more albums with Joe.

The textures on the album are nothing short of amazing. I own all of it! Eddie Van Halen whose playing I love has had a disappointing career as far as production effort.

It’s truly sad this legend cannot hold a candle to Joe as far as music production. I will be seeing Joe in January on the US tour, I have seen him about 5 times and you always walk away from his show shaking your head with a grin a mile wide.

Thanks for your efforts Joe, one of the hardest working musicians ever! One person found this helpful.

MP3 Music Verified Purchase. It’s not hard to predict that the release of another album by a veteran guitar dormhole will be heralded by critics and fans as an instant classic.

boko But with time, even great performances sound a little tinny and dated. I’d be willing awans bet this one doesn’t go that route. There is some overlap with previous albums; you can hear familiar echoes of Flying in a Blue Dream and the Extremist throughout, but there is something much more here: From the first track there’s a driving groove that grabs and holds your attention.

More like a good jazz backbeat overlaid with bluesy electric keys, and set off with melodic and then growling guitars. Simply put, it’s a very tight, complex production. When I got my first Satch album in the Mid Eighties, we were going through the long-haired booo metal phase. It was our generation’s bell bottom craze: Surfing with the Alien set itself apart from all the noise; it was great, because it showed Satriani’s command of rab guitar and his complete, if sometimes brash, versatility.

The albums I mentioned above followed soon after and were both equally good. This album is the grown up version: It’s more subtle and every bit as memorable. Buy it, listen to it; savor it. This may well be an unsurpassable achievement.

I LOVE this record While not a fan of Satrlani, it appears that xnd in that band has reinvigorated his passion to take chances Not much shredding here, which is fine by me, and the warm production is excellent, and makes it a joy to revisit I highly recommend it.
