I started this book last November, read about 30 pages and stopped. I tried reading it again recently, restarted from the beginning, and it is still as difficult to read as it was the last time I tried, but Granofon persevered on and finally managed to finish it. I could only read in small doses though, as my mind wanders off after 10 pages.

The back cover states that this story is about a young boy named Aleksander and his story tellings during the Bosnian war, how he fled to Germany and 10 years later, tries to find the girl that captured his heart a long time ago in Visegrad.

However, it feels that it is very little about what it is supposed to be and more about diary excerpts. The beginning started out great, but it gradually felt like I was reading narrations of someone’s dreams; where it is very disconnected and scattered about all over the place, with no visible flow, and sometimes quite nonsensical.

The time line also seems rather skewed, it yo-yos back and forth from the present to the past, and back again that it sometimes takes a while to grasp what is happening. Even so, I must give props to the author’s storytelling skill.

There is something very nostalgic about the way Aleksander’s thought process goes, and how he grows up from believing he is a magician to wishing that he was. The scenes about the war are very subtle, most probably because Aleksander chose to leave things po;ravlja, so you never really get how gruesome the war can be, as I think he blocks a lot of it out, or describes it in bits and pieces.

But overall, this book is an okay read. Needs lots of concentration tho. The first hundred and twenty pages were so good, but after that it gradually breaks down, characters come and go seemingly at random, the dialogue, symbolism, and action gets more jako more over the top, and I generally lost all interest.

I must be the kalo person on the planet who didn’t like this book. In fact, since I started it – I started and completed three others.

The language is beautiful and once in a while, I read a breathtaking passage, but overall this book was too random. Maybe that’s the point- how random violence of war is and how it shatters a person’s life.

Kako vojnik popravlja gramofon

I’ve read mindblowing books about wars. This one fell very short for me. It seemed to be too cutesy with the child protagonist going on and on and on and on about his grandfather dying.

I hadn’t grasped any nuggets by page Too many books and not enough time.

Passing on this one. The first chapter is brilliant oppravlja then the storyline gets so murky and muddled Popravlua had no idea what was happening or who it was happening to. Somebody needs to tell me what happens vonik the end. But as for interesting and compelling, No. And I ksko saying that about books. But I just could not get into this one.

I felt it went back and forth, sometimes not knowing exactly what place in time we were in or exactly what person was even being discussed. But I did find some beautiful passages. And the odd chapter titles and use of words was very unique. I wanted to like this book more than I did.

Stanisic tells the story of a boy who wants to poopravlja stories, but finds that the truth of his world – a war-torn Bosnia – ends up dominating. This premise sounds beautiful and fascinating, but mostly I found it difficult to follow what was real and what was fiction, and the whole thing just frustrated me. Maybe that was the point Farfar upp i graven Originaltitel: Nach den Kolumnen im U Mag wollte ich dieses Buch unbedingt lesen.

Und es war auch irgendwie interessant und nett geschrieben Some good invention and early promise, but I lost interest after a or so pages. Book was just “ok”. This one didn’t hold my interest and therefore took a long time to finish.
